yo soy hechicero (I am a Sorcerer)
Back in 1995 my friend Iván Drufovka found a Cuban American santero in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey — and we got his permission to make a film about his religious practice. What we captured is an unprecedented look into the much-maligned but little-known religion of Santéria.
We sold our first VHS copy to the library at UC Berkeley, where it was required viewing for several years in the introductory anthropology class.
yo soy hechicero played in many film festivals, and Iván and I traveled widely to present the video, most notably to San Francisco State and the Musée de l'Homme in Paris.
The clip on this page is a four-minute montage of several scenes in the 48-minute film.
